I commend my colleague—Council Member Leroy Comrie—for partnering on a number of proactive and essential steps to ensure that hit and run incidents are treated with the same priority and investigative techniques as other crimes. The sad and unfortunate case of Dante Dominguez—who was struck and killed by a hit and run driver last fall—was further complicated by the fact that critical time elapsed before the NYPD attempted to collect video surveillance from the affected area. That is why our resolution is truly needed—to ensure that the NYPD proactively collects important video surveillance information from cameras within the vicinity of any hit and run accident that results in a fatality or severe injury. This is action is the very least that can be done to make sure that Dante’s untimely passing was not in vain and will, in fact, lead to systemic change. We cannot have another family go through what the Dominguez family is going through.
