At the recent City Council Hearing on the effects of Sequestration on the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) it was brought to light that the Authority had not identified some 9 senior centers originally slated for closure that exist in senior only buildings.

As a follow-up to this hearing, Rosie wrote to New York City Department for the Aging (DFTA) Commissioner Lilliam Barrios-Paoli, which read, in part:

“The purpose of this letter is to let you know that our seniors at Meltzer Tower are exceptionally concerned by the prospective closure of their center, after so much work by the leadership and staff at the building to grow it into a thriving and difference-making entity.  I ask you to please follow up on the promise made at the hearing to ensure that DFTA reevaluates centers that exist at senior only buildings and to move towards an arrangement to preserve the exceptional senior center located at Meltzer, either through opening a NORC there or continuing the present services unabated.”

Rosie remains committed to working closely with all parties to ensure that our seniors at Meltzer continue to receive the continuum of essential services they have come to rely on as cornerstones of their quality of life.
