New York City Councilmembers Rosie Mendez and Melissa Mark-Viverito

Condemn the Mindless Social Media Attacks

Immediately Following the Patriotic Performances of

Marc Anthony and Sebastien de la Cruz

Councilmembers Mendez and Mark-Viverito announced today that they were thoroughly shocked and offended by the negative, ignorant and racist reactions that followed the performances, of American Performers Marc Anthony and Sebastian de la Cruz.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – We were exceptionally proud to witness several stirring and commanding performances of our national anthem and God Bless America recently—including the MLB All Star Game at Citi Field and during Game 3 and 4 of the NBA Finals as sung from the heart by two beloved American performers—Marc Anthony and previously by 11 year old Sebastien de la Cruz.

These uplifting and inspiring performances were of immense inspiration to so many in our City and across our Country—both to those of Latino/Latina heritage and those proud to live in a society that embraces diversity and recognizes it as a singular cornerstone strength.

However, we were thoroughly shocked and offended by the negative, offensive, ignorant and racist reactions that followed these performances, as expressed through social media mechanisms.

The reactions offered were absolutely beneath contempt for two proud and accomplished Americans—one, an aspiring young musician and his bookend counterpart who has had 5 English language hits in the Billboard Top 100 and who was named to the top ten list of influential New Yorkers as compiled by New York Magazine. Marc Anthony’s 22 year career in show business stemming from American pop, urban freestyle and salsa music along with multiple films and a noteworthy Broadway career— makes him a Nuyorican icon and an American idol.

Therefore, we strongly condemn these mindless attacks and recognize the inherent good, not only in the performances of Marc Anthony and Sebastien de la Cruz but in the way they lives their lives, carry themselves and serve as a source of hope to millions of people.
