NYC Council Member Rosie Mendez Statement on Arrest in Islan Nettles Investigation
“Today, an arrest was made in the murder of 21 year old Islan Nettles, a transgender woman, who died in August of 2013 after being brutally beaten. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr. announced the indictment of a young man on assault and manslaughter charges.
“I applaud the District Attorney and his office for their ongoing investigation. While I am pleased that an arrest was finally made, I am extremely saddened and disappointed that it took nearly 2 years for any type of movement in this case.
“Islan Nettles is one of many transgender individuals who have been murdered in the United States. There is a nationwide epidemic where several Trans Women of Color were murdered in 2014 and 2015. These reports are just the reports that we hear about; there are many others that have gone unrecognized. We cannot continue to work while our Trans Sisters and Brothers are murdered on a daily basis.
“We need to talk about the issues that Trans people, particularly Trans Women of Color face: health care, housing, employment, safety, policing, etc. Justice for Islan Nettles is just beginning and I, as a member of the LGBT Caucus of the NYC Council will listen closely and act to ensure she receives the justice she deserves because “Trans Lives matter”.
