NYC Councilwoman Rosie Mendez Statement on the Violence Against Trans Women of Color

“August 17th marked two years since the attack of Islan Nettles in Harlem, a trans woman of color, who died as a result of her injuries after being physically assaulted. Coincidentally, this date also marks the 17th trans woman that has been murdered in the United States just this year alone. Yesterday, Tamara Dominguez was murdered after repeatedly being run over by a vehicle in Kansas City. Violence has reached epidemic proportions and you are more at risk if you are a transgender woman of color. The President of the Unites States needs to address this issue as he would any other epidemic in this country.”
