COUNCIL MEMBERS CHIN AND MENDEZ JOIN TENANT ADVOCATES TO PRAISE PROSECUTION OF NOTORIOUS LANDLORD STEVE CROMAN

Today, Council Member Margaret Chin and Council Member Rosie Mendez joined tenant advocates from the Cooper Square Committee, Good Old Lower East Side (GOLES), University Settlement, and Asian Americans for Equality to issue the following statement in the wake of the prosecution announced yesterday of Steve Croman and a business associate by the office of NYS Attorney General Eric Schneiderman:

“For years, we have worked to protect hard-working tenants from the harassment, deception and fraudulent practices perpetrated by this landlord, who has terrorized hundreds of residents in the single-minded pursuit of maximum profit despite the law at the expense of working families. Though the charges in this indictment are not news to us, or to Steve Croman’s many victims, we are incredibly grateful to Attorney General Schneiderman for finally holding this notorious landlord accountable for his crimes. We also offer a warning to other unscrupulous landlords operating in our City: As this prosecution successfully demonstrates, no building owner is above the law. As advocates for tenants who continue to face harassment, discrimination, and neglect at the hands of landlords, we will continue to fight for safe and affordable housing as a basic human right.”
