Councilwoman Rosie Mendez Statement on the Sentencing of Mark Carson’s Murderer

For Immediate Release    June 16th 2016

Contact: John Blasco   jblasco@council.nyc.gov

“On May 18th, 2013 Mark Carson, a member of our LGBT community, was shot and killed when he was walking down the street with his partner in Greenwich Village.  Carson did not know his attacker, nor did his attacker know him.   He was killed simply because he was a gay man holding hands with another man while walking on a New York City street. On June 14th, 2016, days after the Orlando, Florida mass shooting of LGBT and Latino individuals in the Pulse Nightclub, Judge A. Kirke Bartley sentenced Elliot Morales to 40 years to life in prison in Carson’s murder. We know that the sentencing of Elliot Morales will not bring Mark Carson back to his family, friends, and to our community. However, I find some comfort, and I hope that others do as well, in the appropriately lengthy sentence handed down by the Judge.”
