Elected Officials, community leaders and residents will gather at City Hall to deliver a Valentine’s Day message to Mayor de Blasio. ‘Be True’ to the Lower East Side and stop the City from issuing building permits that would allow for the conversion of a deed restricted community facility to a youth hostel. The “beloved” building, the former CHARAS Cultural Community Center, known as the Old P.S. 64 at 605 E. 9th was auctioned off and sold by Mayor Giuliani 19 years ago and has been vacant for over 16 years. Since 2001, the current owner, Gregg Singer, has tried to turn the former school into a dormitory, though he cannot comply with the Department of Buildings’ Dormitory Rule, 1 RCNY §51-01, which requires the building be fully leased to a College or University. Elected officials and residents of the Lower East Side continue to urge that the Mayor return the once beloved center to the community. The historic landmarked building was saved by the community in the 1970’s and, more recently; the Lower East Side lost another beloved deed restricted community facility–Rivington House.
